November 6, 2008 by irisoverseas

Winter is coming, most of them have got heaters in their horse to make their house warm in winter but our horses also need some extra care. I would like to share some tips with you:

  • Remove Horse boots: Remove horse shoes if you are not riding in winter since horse boots accumulates snow in them making horse feet cold.
  • Whether to use Horse Blanket or not: There are three conditions of horses in winter and depending on its condition it is decided whether to cover him with winter horse blanket or not. These are:
    • Horse sitting idle in winter: If your horse is not working in winter, do not blanket him. The horse has  the habit of growing thick coat of hair to keep them warm from cold winter.
    • Horse working regularly in winter: If you are riding your horse regularly in winter, cover him with horse blankets immediately; brush his hair coat so that hair stands on its own. It prevents the horse sweat which can lead to chill.
    • Horse having the habit of remaining in blanket : If you horse has the habit of remaining in blanket in winter do not change this habit.
  • Do not give him cold water to drink: Horses avoid cold water in drinking, warm the water a little bit before giving them to drink.
  • Increase his diet: An increase in diet will keep his body temperature warm in winter. Provide them hay in large amount, hay chewing increases its digestion process which leads to heat generation in horse body and helps in normal functioning of its body in winter.
